IPCA is the only freestanding, unaffiliated outpatient interdisciplinary Pain Medicine program the Southwestern United States.  Through a systems thinking approach to management; via award winning innovation in information technology; and by careful blending of medical, behavioral and interventional services with research, teaching, and community outreach IPCA has translated the concept of interdisciplinary health care to reality without university, corporate, or grant funding support.

Achieving APS Center of Excellence Status is  therefore a profound milestone for IPCA and for the specialty of Pain Medicine, and perhaps for healthcare in general, because our APS Center of Excellence status shows that it is possible to operate the Integrative, Interdisciplinary Model of health care delivery successfully using only clinical revenue as a funding source - in spite of all the reimbursement inequities and inneficiencies that plague our healthcare system.

We hope that our success serves to inspire many others to attempt what we have done, and this year the IPCA research program is gearing up for a multiyear outcomes study comparing multidisciplinary care versus care as usual to provide data on process and clinical outcomes of the IPCA model.  "This award elevates IPCA to a one of a kind status, we are the only program with National Center of Excellence status in the Southwestern United States, and more importantly, the only private non-affiliated general pain program with COE status in the entire United States."  Says Dr Bennet Davis, President of the Integrative Pain Center.  "We are the first to translate the University interdisciplinary model to the community, and this puts a lot of pressure on us.  We want to be sure that we document our achievement - what works and what doesn't - so that others can build on what we have done; and we need to build enduring partnerships with university programs on the same level as IPCA to develop the model further and to translate it to other areas of healthcare."

2007 Winners of THE SASIE AWARD for

    " BEST USE OF TECHNOLOGY"

For innovation in Information technology, the Integrative Pain Center of Arizona was awarded "Best use of Technology" for medium sized businesses in Southern Arizona by the Southern Arizona Small Business Association in 2007.  CLICK HERE TO LINK TO THE AWARD.

The Integrative Pain Center has adapted off the shelf electronic medical records (EMR) to manage complex work flows inherent to an interdisciplinary medical clinic.  This important milestone was a prerequisite to accomplishing safe, timely, effective, and well coordinated care in an efficient manner, holding down costs.  Without this and other innovations, IPCA could not have achieved Center of Excellence status in 2010.  IPCA holds a patent application on the process used tp convert standard EMR patient records systems into work flow management systems.
