What's New!
23 April 2007

A new patient history form is now posted. And for providers making referrals there is now a new simplified referal form.

Integrative Pain Center of Arizona was among the winners of the 2007 Southern Arizona Smart Inspiring Enterprise awards. The awards come from the The Arizona Small Business Association and Tucson Business Edge.

IPCA's "SASIE" award was given for Use of Technology in a company with 11 to 25 employees.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is getting ready to widen Interstate 10 through downtown Tucson. In order to speed up the process, the department will be closing ramps downtown for 3 years. If you use the interstate as part of your journey to IPCA this may require you to change your route. We have added some suggestions that may aid your travel.

One of IPCA's founding partners and President Bennet Davis, MD is Metropolitan Tucson Chamber of Commerce's 2006 Small Busines Leader of of the Year. The award was presented Thursday October 5th 2006 at Wells Fargo Bank's Copper Cactus Awards dinner.

There are three revised pain treatment descriptions on the "Pain Treatments Procedures" page.

THERMAL ANNULOPLASTY (also called: IDETT, Intra-Discal Electro-Thermal Therapy) is a minimally invasive spine procedure that is intended to treat mid and lower back pain. It is not for the leg pain (sciatica) that goes with a herniated or slipped disc. THERMAL ANNULOPLASTY is for people who have back pain that interferes with their lives and which does not get enough better with physical therapy and medications.

Percutaneous Diskectomy (also called PLEDD, laser discectomy, PLD, LASE™, posterior lateral extra foraminal disc decompression, Nucleoplasty™, chemonucleolysis) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for buttock and leg pain from a small herniated disc (slipped disk, disc protrusion).

PERMANENT ANESTHETIC BLOCK OF SPINAL FACET JOINTS (Radio Frequency Lesioning, joint denervation, thermocoagulation of facet nerves) is a minimally invasive technique for relieving neck and back pain. It uses is a specialized machine called a “radiofrequency lesion generator” to block pain signals coming from painful joints or fractures in the spine.

Why am I now being charged an administrative fee for prescription refills?

"Beginning August 1, 2004 this fee is necessary due to the physician's inability to pay for increasing malpractice costs. The Integrative Pain Center of Arizona has attempted to keep this administrative fee as low as possible. ..."

Current and Future Approaches to
Lumbar Disc Surgery

(A Literature Review)

Abstract

"
Herniation may occur anywhere along the spine but most commonly in the lumbar region, usually between the fifth lumbar and first sacral vertebrae (L5-S1). The usual cause is degeneration of the posterior longitudinal ligaments and the annulus fibrosis, frequently occurring in adults 35 years and older. Surgical interventions to treat degenerative disc disease range from the widely accepted microdiscectomy to those considered experimental. The clinical indications for microdiscectomy are similar to those for automated percutaneous discectomy and chemonucleolysis and include unilateral radicular symptoms with leg pain more severe than back pain, positive straight leg raise test, other signs of root dysfunction, and failure to improve after a minimum of 6 weeks of conservative medical therapy. Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar fusion is the treatment of choice in monosegmental lumbar degeneration. Percutaneous lumbar discectomy is indicated in noncontained disc herniations. Transforaminal endoscopic microdiscectomy differs from other percutaneous discectomy procedures in that direct visualization of the pathology and neuroanatomic structures is possible. Unlike the other approaches to lumbar disc surgery, laparoscopic discectomy has the advantage that extruded, and even some migrated fragments can be removed. Criteria for stereotactic lumbar microdiscectomy include patients with signs and symptoms of lumbar radiculopathy with disc herniation at the corresponding level on CT or MRI. An abnormal EMG corresponding to the level of the abnormal disc also provides support for performing this procedure. Clinical indications for percutaneous laser discectomy are similar to those for conventional microsurgical disc removal. Lumbar intervertebral disc transplant has been attempted only in the canine model."

"Although there is no cure for osteoporosis,it may be prevented and treated. Many risk factors such as a poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking can be avoided. It is never too late to begin taking steps to prevent osteoporosis, or to slow or stop its progress." ...

"Vertebroplasty can be successful at relieving pain. In fact, studies have shown that 75-90% of patients report either complete relief or significant reduction of their pain. Complications are rare, but as with any medical procedure, you need to discuss these possibilities with your doctor." ...
